It is never easy to say good bye to a old and dear friend. I lost one of my Dachshunds on Sunday afternoon.

Heidi was old and not in the best of health for quite awhile, but she continued to move around and eat..but mostly sleep.

I had long planned for her leaving because of her age (15) and diabetes, so I had made a casket for her and chose a nice resting place for her...still..

It doesn't make it any easier for me, I'm heartbroken over her going.

My other Dachshund Heinz is still looking for her all over the house and yard..he is confused as to where she went..and so am I....

Sorry to hear this Nav.

Losing a dog can be much like losing a family member.

Thoughts are with you

 Thank you...

She is resting now under some Blueberry bushes, surrounded by flowers, she would have liked that, and it is the least I could do for my dear little girl

Dogs are productive, useful members of the family.  That's why it's always so difficult to lose them.  They're not pets like cats or birds in my estimation.  They fill a role in the house just like a person.

Usually the advice I give in times like these is regarded as bad advice by most, so take it with a grain of salt.  Literally, a couple grains of salt, a couple of slices of lime and a fine bottle of Tequila and some Jimmy Buffet usually gets me back to.....well...I'm never really good.  But it gets me back to normal, anyway.  It can't hurt (after 3-4 PM the next day, that is).

Hope it passes quick for you, Nav.  None of us has long enough to spend too much time grieving.

Heartbreaking.

A friend of mine recently lost his good friend also.

It's so hard, they only live a relatively short life but give you everything a human wants...loyalty, unconditional love, comradery, comfort, and someone to talk too.

Sorry.

'Uncommon' recently reminded me of 'BBP's quote..."Dogs are better than people"

There is truth to that.

Dog won't put on airs or make-up then leave you for a better dog.

Dog doesn't care if there are one or two dirty dishes in the sink.

Dog doesn't care what you want to watch on TV....etc, etc.

Dog just wants to love YOU. That's as cool as it gets.

Ow www, crap.

That is sad.

Your other dog will figure-out what happened pretty fast, then will come to you and know that you need comfort.

Dog,...go figure.

Well that sucks Nav, sorry to hear that.  It's always hard losing a pet, dog or cat.  I'm beginning to wonder why I adopted a cat, as I'm just going to be attached to her for 18 years, and lose her.  Though the time is now, and pets lead to healthy lives, for the most part of course.

We have several older dogs and a lot of cats in our home.  They are definitely members of the family and will be missed when their time comes.  We adopted our oldest dog (now 16) about 2 and 1/2 years ago, when his owner's life had changed to the point where she couldn't keep him anymore.  He has become my wife's favorite dog and has made quite an impact in our house.
By the way, we found out about the old man on the Best Friends website and crove to Lincoln, Nebraska to get him.  He was scheduled for "the needle" a couple of weeks later.

catman,  You're a good man for saving the dog.  My pup is now one and a half, and I'm very attached to him.  Hate to see him get old.  He is so lively now, I can barely keep up.  He is always ready to go!

That's cool.

Define 'a lot of cats'...what, like 100's?  Smiley My imagination runs wild at times.
