I like Strait and Jackson, but the older country is the best, I agree.  Old possum-Geoge Jones is hard to beat.  Country is much better today than it was in the 70s and 80s for sure.  Too many corney songs with awful lyrics.  Such as:  "If I catch you cheatin' around on me again, I'll kill you little darlin'".  Whispering Bill Anderson had a song with the lyrics, "you don't know the pattern of my mind because my mind it has no pattern."  Many of the current country artists today have actually got talent.  Good riddance to crap such as Convoy and Give me 40 acres and I'll turn this rig around.

Not to mention Conway Twitty. Smiley

Editors note:  Please read the following with a nasal voice.

Interesting you should mention lyrics, considering I am presently gathering a wealth of information regarding the sociacultural-cum-political concerns of “composers as intellectuals” in the post modernism world.

The problem I’m facing is I don’t know exactly what the hell it means.  Otherwise, all is well.

Now, having established (in my own mind), that music reaches deep within, there does exist a certain, shall we say, intellectualism in musical composition that, not only transcends individual consciousness, but also gives you a better chance of scoring with the chick with the high I.Q.

The key, of course, is in utilizing a fair amount of alcohol if a date-rape drug is not at your disposal.

Having said that, two like-minded individuals (although a paradox in the strictest sense of pseudo-intellectualism), can enjoy a foot-stompin’ , dopamine-producing musical concert, as long as they have good seats and both have brought lighters.   Of course, I could elaborate more, but fortunately for all, my thesaurus lies in another room.

Nevertheless, the main point is musical composition does not necessarily need an intellectual component. Sometimes, it's just meant to be fun.  Thought-provoking lyrics that stir the imagination are usually for pseudo-intellectuals and acid-heads that do not have the sense to get some mental stimulation from reading a book.  Now, without making this diatribe into something personal, I couldn’t give two shits if they all died tomorrow.

In the meantime, me and my cousins (one of which I’m married too) will continue to enjoy a wide variety of musical expression, whether or not they stimulate the cerebral or salacious appetites.

I’ll end this with one of my personal favorites.  I hope you can enjoy the lyrics as well as the music.  The Beatles wrote All You Need Is Love, which they repeated over and over again until we all got the message and left the room.  And then there was Barbara Mandrell who, on the other hand, had a different take on a similar subject.   Enjoy.

I think he was only listing who came up as 'customers who bought this also bought' not comparing the two.

I like some country, old country mostly.  I don't really like Alan Jackson much though.  IMHO that's girly music meant to impress young ladies more than make good music.  I like a couple George Strait songs.

I like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Bill Anderson, Faron Young, Johnny Horton, Earnest Tubbs: that kind of country.  In the era of Jackson and Strait I like Travis Tritt and Ricky Scaggs, mostly Bluegrass types.  And, of course, Charlie Daniels.

I completely get what you mean re "girly music", but I wouldn't label Jackson with that. He's like 50 something and married with kids. Maybe it's just a different perspective. When I hear him on the radio sandwiched in with Rascal Flatts, Chuck Wicks, Taylor Swift, Lonestar... he sounds like Hank reincarnate.

I like Williams, Cash, Anderson and Jones. I'll throw in Merle and Waylon to complete the pantheon. Tritt seems more of an heir to the Allman Bros and Skynyrd than to Hank, but I like him too.

I'm also big on Garth's cowboy songs, but I feel like we'll differ on him. Brad Paisley, Randy Travis and Chris Young have some great traditional, mainstream country music. Unfortunately that's not really in demand right now, and country artists have to release the effeminate stuff to get airplay. Instead of losing their dogs or their cheating women, they've lost their balls.

Here's something non-girly: Allman Bros sing the Rolling Stones

Wait!  Can you feel that?  It's the lack of Rivers, it's creating a sort of euphoric serenity, a passive state that's so affecting and profound that it takes on characteristics of an action.  No one is calling anyone names in broken grammar with 3rd grade punctuation.  No one is claiming a deep understanding of the inner workings of government while simultaneously juxtaposing semicolons for commas and hyphenating compound words like jack-ass.  Suddenly I understand the word bliss.

Sorry, back to the topic.

I LOVE the Allman Brothers, always have.

Waylon and Willie!  Thumbs Up  "Them that don't know him won't like him and them that do sometimes won't know how to take him."  It's like they know me. Smiley

Garth is...  umm...  you know he doesn't write his music, right?  It's really hard to respect people who don't write their own music.  It means they're performers at best, talent scouts to be honest.  I'd like to like Don Williams but it's the same thing.

They haven't all lost their balls.  Take from this guitar player, they don't come much better than this.

Rivers has been officially banned.  His time at OTF has come to an end.  He made one too many threats.

His ISP has been banned from viewing this site so he won't be reading as a guest anymore either.  Good riddance.

Wow, I can't believe you know Junior Brown, Poe.  He is great!  Actually, the instrument he plays is a "guit-steel", which he invented.  He can play ANYTHING, and play it well.  Even if you don't like country, check him out if you get a chance.  He's great.

LOL I guess we can call this "evolution" at its finest!  I'm with CK, don't really like Kid Rock, but there's nothing wrong with him finding something people like and making money from it.  I have such an array of music though it's mostly alternative/rock based.  You can find me listening to anything from Nine Inch Nails, to The Doors, and up to Modest Mouse.  I dig classic rock as that's what I grew up with.  Still not a country fan, though some are very talented I'll give them that.
